Foreshore Reserves Aren’t Yours To Prune

Central Coast Council’s community land plan of management, in force from 14 July 2025, lists five Gorokan lots as natural area foreshore, including land on Lett Street, Howelston Road, Dalnott Road and Malvina Parade. It lists many more Gorokan lots as parks.

Trees on council land

A tree on a foreshore reserve or park is council’s. Council’s rules treat removal from public land by anyone other than a public authority as covered, so contact council on 02 4306 7900 instead of arranging removal yourself, even for a branch that overhangs your fence.

Plants at the water’s edge

NSW DPI Fisheries requires a permit to harm mangroves, saltmarsh or seagrass on the foreshore up to about 1.0 m AHD. The rule is explained on our Davistown page, and it applies to any block that touches an estuary shore, including the Tuggerah Lakes.

A Local Tree To Identify Before Anyone Cuts

Gorokan sits next to Charmhaven, where the Charmhaven apple (Angophora inopina) was first described. NSW lists it as vulnerable, and the state’s profile says its main population occurs between Charmhaven and Morisset. A published 2004 survey says the species most commonly occurs on the Doyalson and Gorokan soil landscapes, which are mapping units and don’t follow suburb boundaries, so they don’t tell you that a tree on your block is one.

It looks like a common tree. The Charmhaven apple is a small, often multi-stemmed tree, and it closely resembles rough-barked apple. Council’s tree exemptions don’t apply to threatened species, so identify a tree of this type before anyone cuts it. Our Charmhaven page covers the species in more detail, and our arborist page explains the evidence council asks for.

Before You Book In Gorokan

  1. Work out whether the tree is on your land or on a council reserve or foreshore lot. Council can tell you on 02 4306 7900.
  2. If your block touches the lake, check what grows below the high-tide line before anything is cut.
  3. Have the species identified, especially a small, multi-stemmed tree.
  4. Check the exemptions on our home page, and keep any evidence council asks for.
  5. If a storm has brought a tree down, start with our emergency tree removal page.
  6. Decide about the stump. Our stump grinding page covers the options.
