Check What’s Underground First

A stump grinder cuts below the surface, and the roots of a mature tree often run close to pipes and cables. Before grinding, it’s worth finding out what is buried near the stump.

Lodge a free Before You Dig enquiry. Before You Dig Australia is the national referral service for underground infrastructure, and it says anyone planning excavation should contact it first. You can lodge online at any hour, or call 1100. Ask whoever is grinding your stump whether they do this on every job.

What the service gives you, and what it doesn’t:

A list of who has assets nearby

You get a confirmation sheet listing the member organisations that have underground assets near your site. The plans themselves come from those asset owners, not from Before You Dig Australia.

Not every asset owner is a member

Before You Dig Australia says that not all asset owners are members, so the sheet may not show everything. It also wouldn’t be expected to show private services such as garden lighting or irrigation. Mention anything like that to whoever is grinding.

Council’s Rules And The Stump

Central Coast Council’s tree chapter defines removing vegetation as cutting down, uprooting, killing or otherwise destroying it. The chapter I read doesn’t mention stump grinding by name, so the useful question is what happened to the tree. If you’re unsure, council’s number is 02 4306 7900.

Where the stump came from What to check
A tree removed on your land under an exemption or a permit Keep the evidence. For exempt removals, council asks for arborist evidence of species and condition for six months after removal. Our arborist page explains what that looks like, and the full list of exemptions is on our home page.
A tree cut down by a previous owner, or at an unknown time There may be no evidence of why or when it was cut. If you can’t tell whether it was lawful, ask council before grinding.
A stump that is still sprouting It may still be living vegetation. Ask council before grinding.
A stump on council land, such as a nature strip It isn’t yours to remove. Council’s rules treat removal from public land by anyone other than a public authority as covered, so contact council instead.

Grinding Or Removing The Stump

Stump grinding

The stump is ground down below the surface. It doesn’t take out the whole root system, which is why it suits most turfing, garden bed and paving jobs.

Stump removal

The stump and roots are dug out. That means more ground disturbance, which makes the underground check above more important. See our stump removal page.

Before You Book

  1. Lodge a free Before You Dig enquiry, and show the confirmation to whoever is doing the grinding.
  2. Mark anything private that’s buried near the stump, such as lighting, irrigation or a private water line.
  3. Decide what the space is for. Turf, a garden bed, paving or a replacement tree may all need different depths.
  4. Decide what happens to the wood chips: taken away, or left as mulch.
  5. Check where the stump came from, using the table above, and keep any removal evidence you have.

If the stump belongs to a tree that hasn’t been removed yet, our tree removal page is the place to start. For a block with many stumps, our land clearing page explains the approvals that apply.

Get your stump looked at
