Stump Removal Central Coast, New South Wales
Local Tree Removal Gosford provides stump removal on the Central Coast for homes, commercial sites and rural properties, from grinding below ground to full extraction of the stump and major roots. This page explains what digging out a stump involves and what has to be checked first.
Digging Out A Stump Counts As Excavation
Stump grinding reduces the stump below the surface and leaves the roots in the ground. Stump removal digs out the stump and its major roots. That difference matters because digging is excavation, and NSW treats excavation near underground services seriously.
Ausgrid says NSW legislation requires people planning excavation work to get underground electricity cable plans from Before You Dig Australia, and that the plans must be no more than 30 days old when excavation starts. Before You Dig Australia describes notifying it as a legal requirement for anyone excavating near gas and electricity networks in NSW. The NSW Government’s energy site says it is mandatory before certain types of excavation, so ask your contractor whether your job is one of them. Our stump grinding page explains how the free enquiry works and what the plans don’t show.
Work near gas and electricity services is treated as high risk. SafeWork NSW’s guide to working near underground assets says work on, near or adjacent to gas and electricity services is deemed high-risk construction work, and that water and sewerage assets may be too. The more digging a job involves, the more this matters.
When Digging Out The Whole Stump Makes Sense
Whether a stump should be ground or dug out depends on what goes in its place.
Building work
If footings, a slab or a shed will sit on the spot, ask your builder or certifier what they want cleared. If a development consent covers the work, council’s tree chapter doesn’t apply to removal authorised by that consent, so read what it says about the tree. Our land clearing page covers the approvals.
Paving, walls or underground works
If something will be built over or into the ground where the roots are, ask whoever is designing it whether grinding is enough or the roots have to come out.
Turf, garden beds or planting
Grinding is often enough here. See our stump grinding page, including the table on where the stump came from.

What To Ask Before You Book
- Has a Before You Dig enquiry been lodged? And will the plans still be under 30 days old on the day digging starts?
- Who is locating private services? Private lines and asset owners who aren’t members may not appear on the plans.
- How much of the root system is coming out, and what will the hole be filled with?
- Where did the stump come from? Council’s rules turn on that. If the tree was removed under an exemption, keep the arborist evidence, which our arborist page explains.
- Is there a development consent? Read what it says about the tree before anything is dug.
If the tree is still standing, our tree removal page is the place to start. The full list of council exemptions is on our home page.
Get your stump looked at
Tell us where the stump is, roughly how big it is and what will go in its place. If you know about anything buried nearby, mention it.
