A Local Tree To Identify Before Anyone Cuts
The Charmhaven apple (Angophora inopina) was first described from specimens collected near Charmhaven, and it still takes its name from the suburb. It’s a small tree, up to about 8 m, and is often multi-stemmed. NSW lists it as vulnerable, and the state’s threatened species profile says its main population occurs between Charmhaven and Morisset. The same profile names habitat loss from residential and industrial development as a threat.
Central Coast Council names it among the threatened species found in its area. Council’s tree exemptions don’t apply to threatened species, which need a Biodiversity Conservation Licence from the state before any pruning or removal. The full list of exemptions is on our home page.
Don’t go by appearance. The Australian Plants Society says the Charmhaven apple is very similar to rough-barked apple (Angophora floribunda), and that some people treat it as a coastal stunted form of that species. If you have a small, multi-stemmed tree of this type on a Charmhaven block, get it identified before anyone cuts it. Our arborist page explains the evidence council asks for.
Large Bushland Blocks And Development
In June 2025, Coast Community News reported a proposal by Third.i Group for a masterplanned community on about 200 ha of bushland between the Pacific Highway and Arizona Road, with a first development application for 56 homes then on public exhibition. That is a news report of a proposal, and its current status isn’t confirmed here, so check council’s development application tracker if your land is nearby.
It matters for tree work because council’s tree chapter doesn’t apply to removal authorised by a development consent. On land covered by a consent, the consent decides which trees can come down. Our land clearing page covers the approvals for larger jobs.

Before You Book In Charmhaven
- Find your lot’s zoning, and whether council’s tree chapter applies to it. Council’s number is 02 4306 7900.
- Identify the species, especially a small, multi-stemmed tree of the Angophora type.
- Check for a development consent on your land or the block beside you.
- Check whether you’re in a mapped 10/50 area if the work is about clearing around your home. The rules are on our home page.
- If a storm has brought a tree down, start with our emergency tree removal page.
- Decide about the stump. Our stump grinding page covers the options, and our tree removal page explains how council’s permit process works.
